There was a clickbait news report that was like, “Bridge wreaks HAVOC on unsuspecting truck drivers!”
Fuck ém all. They added a warning sign, a light that automatically turns to red, they have the old height warning, and still people ignore it or even blow through the new red lights, ignoring the electronic overheight warning. Something something they built a better idiot something.

Incredible! Also, CR-Z at 1:00 in case people didn’t catch it.

I don’t think their sign is very good, and having the light just turn green again seems poorly thought out, but ultimately I don’t see how anyone can blame anyone other than driver. This sign is really about all that’s required:
That said, I think there are some relatively simple things they could, and should do to avoid these accidents. Unfortunately, better driver training and more frequent testing don’t fall into the “relatively simple” bucket.

We used to have a flashing neon “Bridge too low” sign in Regina that Never worked, it’s gone now. The “too low” Bridge is actually an underpass that’s not angled correctly, so a semi truck and about 3/4 of a 53' trailer will pass just fine and get up to a decent speed before the last 12 feet of trailer is converted into a de bris field and then the rest is extracted by a big rig tow truck. Happens 3 or 4 times a year. As I recall, the sign was just always lit, never worked and they just gave up, knowing that no one does it twice.

It comes up every time there’s one of 11'8" stories, but this waterfall stop sign in Sydney is really damn cool:
I don’t know how viable the tech is, and if it is bright enough to be seen during the day, but it leaves no room for misunderstanding.

I think the majority of these are rented trucks

I’m not sure what difference that makes?

that it isn’t just training, but tiered driver licen s es should be formed. .

It works better than anything on that 11 foot stupid bridge does...

That looks quite effective, stupid will always find a way though.

The thinking goes that some rando that rented a U-Haul for the weekend isn’t going to be as experienced or familiar with the truck as an actual trucker would be , so they don’t make the connection between the signs and the height of the vehicle they’re driving. Given that most of the people that plow into 11'8" are either renters or RVers, I can’t say I disagree.

Sure, but that doesn’t really present a solution? Aside from not allowing people to rent a 26' foot box truck with a normal driver’s license, which I strongly support (get those class-A RVs out too). In this case though, while the truck might have been a rental, it is presumably being used commercially, since your average u-haul renter type doesn’t have much use for a refrigerated truck.

Have they installed them anywhere else yet? I’ve only ever found reference to them being used in Sydney back in 2013 .

Sometimes there is no 100% solution, you just have to stop what you can and mitigate the rest. Obviously the best solution would be to regrade the rail to raise the bridge, but the railroad has no interest in spending that kind of cash since their bridge isn’t really taking any damage. Lowering the road is a non-starter, as is simply closing the underpass, so we’re left trying to warn people Bad Things will happen if you try to drive under the bridge.

I haven’t heard of it, which suggests there are some issues to work out (hopefully not fatal flaws)

Can’t blame the railroad for not wanting to raise the bridge, I’m pretty sure all of the regrading (including lifting other nearby bridges, and probably installing new retaining walls since it’s above grade) would be vastly more expensive than lowering the road and rerouting the utilities. And frankly neither of those suggestions is really needed since the steel beam protects the bridge and drivers can and should see the signage.
All that said, I do think there’s still remove for improvement in the signage.
